We aim to be a progressive voice in the deep-sea bulk shipping industry, contributing to driving the transition to low carbon shipping

Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) believes sustainable shipping is good business and launches new environmental strategy and action plan to set the course for the next decade and beyond.

Only by setting ambitious targets to reduce CO2 emissions, improve carbon intensity in our operation and get started on developing a zero emissions vessel, can we ensure that we are doing our part in driving the transition towards low carbon shipping. KCC will therefore go beyond the ambitions set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). By 2022 we are set to reach IMOs 2030 goal of a 40 % reduction in carbon intensity per transported tonne-mile, and by 2030 we aim to be carbon neutral. In 2050, our ambition is zero emission operation.

Accountability and transparency to ensure we are on the right path

Setting out on this low-carbon journey, sustainability reporting will be an integral part of our reporting scheme, reporting on specific KPIs that can be measured and tracked over time. Not only to ensure that we are improving in all areas, but also to ensure that we are on the track to the targets we have set. Third party audits are key in this work.

Engebret Dahm, Chief Executive Officer says, “We believe that customers going forward increasingly will demand sustainable low carbon transport solutions, and that our ability to provide such services with our fleet of combination carriers will provide us with a clear competitive advantage. Though our action plan, we will take significant steps towards low carbon shipping to secure our customers that KCC will continue to offer the most energy efficient and low-carbon emission solution there is”.

We can always do better

When compared to standard tanker and dry bulk vessels our combination carriers provide the most environmentally friendly solution available today. These vessels can transport both wet and dry cargo, and are full 90 % of the time, whilst regular tanker and dry bulk vessels typically ballast 30-50 % of the time in the same trading patterns. This gives a reduction of up to 40 % on CO2 emissions for the same transport work, when performed by a combination carrier. This is a great starting point, but not enough.

Our environmental strategy is built on 6 main pillars:

  1. Reaching or exceeding IMO’s 2030 and 2050 ambitions. Targeting a carbon neutral operation within 2030, and work towards reaching a zero-emissions operation within 2050

  2. Going beyond compliance of environmental regulations

  3. Promoting new regulations and solutions through active participation in the Norwegian and International shipping clusters

  4. Total life cycle approach to environmental solutions

  5. Co-operate closely with customers to reduce local and global emissions

  6. Transparent reporting of environmental performance and strategic targets, and independent third-party audit of environmental KPIs.

We view the transition towards low carbon shipping as a great opportunity. The goals have been set for the next 3 years and will be reached through further improving fuels, operation, trading patterns and investments in new technology that make a significant impact on our emissions. Only by having a «global» approach will we be able to contribute to a more sustainable industry. We will therefore evaluate all environmental initiatives based on their “total life cycle” emissions effects and test them based on a “well to wake” principle.
