Using digital tools as part of our strategy to reach our target of carbon neutral operation within 2030 and to optimize our operation
A series of smaller improvements have been enabled already, and several more will come through live streaming of data and data- analytics helping us to improve energy, operational and cost efficiency and further improve safety and the quality of our services to our customers.
Reducing fuel consumption through use of live data
Following successful testing since 2019, KCC is substantially expanding the use of live data streaming from operational systems onboard KCC’s vessels onto the DNV GL’s Veracity platform with the use of software from Arundo Analytics. Successful tests using live data to optimize the running of auxiliary engines has resulted in 5-10% reduction in fuel consumption and thus carbon emissions from the auxiliary engines onboard KCC’s fleet. Similar tools are under development for the heat management and inerting systems as well.
Using 360-degree cameras to reduce time of dry to wet switching
KCC documents the cleanliness of its cargo tanks after completing every dry to wet cargo switching with the use of 360-degree cameras and with immediate online streaming on DNV GL’s Veracity platform. By logging on to the platform showing high-resolution 360-degree pictures, KCC’s customers can verify cleaning and coating quality of every part the cargo tanks before loading of tanker cargoes. KCC targets to replace time-consuming physical inspections by such digital inspections to all its customers saving minimum 1-2 days per operation.
Optimizing maintenance through condition-based monitoring on key components
KCC is in the process of rolling out online condition monitoring of critical equipment on its entire fleet based on the Betavib system provided by Karsten Moholt. Insights from the condition monitoring data shall be used to optimize e.g. maintenance intervals and spare part inventory to reduce costs and minimize downtime. With reference to the 360 cameras and our cargo tank conversions, we are also looking at how to optimize aspects such as tank cleaning operations through further use of the data we have, with added condition verifications, to continue to deliver the highest quality cargo condition in even more efficient ways.
